How
to Make a Lapped Zip for a Soft Furnishing Opening on a Cushion
- With right side to right side, machine a
2cm seam using a long stitch length. Set stitch length back to
'normal'.
- Press seam open.
- Open up the zip and place one
side of zip face down with teeth along seam line, and pin to a single
layer of the seam allowance. See Figure. With zip foot in place and
needle to right of the zip foot, machine in place along zip tape.
- Close up the zip and turn under,
revealing a fold next to the teeth. Machine along this fold through
the three thicknesses with needle to right of zip foot.
- Turn work round and place zip
tape along the other single layer of seam allowance, as shown. Machine
down with needle to right hand side of zip foot as before.
- Turn fabric to right side and
machine about 1cm from zip using the zip foot with the needle set to
the left hand side.
- Unpick seam along the length
of the zip.
- Once the zip is machined in,
then complete your cushion by machining round the other three sides,
right side to right side.
- You are now ready to proceed
to hand sew your chosen trimmings of cord, fringing, key
tassels, etc.
